Application

So last week I got an e-mail from the university saying that they got my application but they are still waiting on my fanshawe transcripts. this doesn't really make much sense to me, since I called fanshawe first when I sent everything out. I went to my old high school and dealt with that personally, and they were very nice about it too, and sent it the day after.

but apparently it takes 3 - 4 days for fanshawe to send information to universities and whatnot. which will be fun after my time is done at NSCAD when I apply for more school. I'll have to get all of then to send out information allll over again ( highschool, Fanshawe, NSCAD would all have to send my transcripts if i choose to attend another university).

but since that is all taken care of, I just have to sit and wait for a booklet in the mail from the university, then i can pick out my classes and whatnot online. As far as I know, I wont get that till march. But I hope I get it soon.

Cheers

Awards Ceremony

as some of you know, I got the Siskind award for my work ethic at fanshawe college. I went the the ceremony just expecting a piece of paper with my name on it, but I ended up getting a cheque for a thousand dollars!@# :D so I'm really excited over that, of course that money goes into my savings for university.

I sent my application to NSCAD on monday, and while my mother and I were in the post office, my mom had a little panic attack. She was filling out the address and spelt the university name wrong and she was shaking all over the place. completely understandable since shes doesnt really want me to be that far away. I had to take over and re write it out for her. then because I'm sending a CD instead of a flash drive with my application my mother wanted the cd to be in a bubble envelope and the papers in a bubble envelope and all wrapped in cardboard registered mail folder that the university has to sign for.. hahahaha all over my mom freaking out because she doesnt want my application to be wreaked in any way. so my application is heading to halifax completely bubbled in an armoured car surrounded by the royal army sent by the Queen. HAHA

Cheers

Great news

After my show in London. the Siskinds bought one of my paintings. In fact, it was the one that I entered into the BMO competition. I've never sold a painting before, so this was a very exciting experience for me.

:]

Painting Anxiety.

It's been about a month since I started my new painting, and for some reason, I can't find the motivation to finish it. Perhaps it's because of the paintings size. Or the colours that I'm using.

I find myself now drawing fish skeletons and dead insects. I don't believe there is any connection to my anxieties of art. I don't know where it's going.

at this moment, i've been working on my admissions essay for university.

I need to pull through this artist block.

I'll also be posting some of my installation pictures and a shot of me and my work :] an probably a video..

So it turns out that I didn't win the National or Provincial prize for the BMO Competition but I'm proud of the ones that entered and at least had their work seen by others.

My BMO entry

A couple months ago, I was given an entry form for the BMO1stART! competition from my professor Tony, and he chose three individuals from 3rd year, me included in his selection to enter into this competition. which is pretty fucking cool i must say, since I'm never chosen for anything like that ever. (this picture being the piece I entered into the competition).

here's a little info:

BMO Financial Group's 1st Art! Invitational Student Art Competition celebrates the creativity of art students from post-secondary institutions across Canada. Deans and instructors of undergraduate certificate, diploma, and degree programs in visual art are invited to select from their graduating classes three students, whose ability and imagination place them 1st among their peers. A distinguished selection committee chooses a national winner and one winner from each eligible province and territory.

The national winner receives $5,000 and the regional winners each receive $2,500 for his or her artwork. The national winner’s work will become part of BMO’s corporate art collection, which includes historical and contemporary Canadian masters such as Kenojuak Ashevak, Emily Carr, Paterson Ewen, Tom Forestall, Marc-Aurèle Fortin, Lawren Harris, Thaddeus Holownia, David Milne, Margaret Priest, Denyse Thomasos, Ian Wallace and others. All winning entries will be on display at the 1st Art! 2010 exhibition, held at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art in October 2010.

My artist statement for this competition and for my final display we're pretty much the same, however I went into more detail about my painting "Riot" in the statement for BMO, i've never really been good at writing these so I hope that they understand what I'm talking about . ...

Artist Statement (For BMO1stART entry)

In this process of oil painting, the first layer starts it’s development as geometric abstractions which are then made to support very loose and gestural layers of Oil paint. A mark is established on the canvas, which is then given a great deal of carefully calculated drying time, then followed by the attentive semi-removal and blending of gestural marks. A rhythm is created with the continuous layering of vibrant colour. The layers of colour are then blended out and refined with a gestural mark, which is then blended out again and then refined to a more focused mark. Another layer of smaller marks is added to create a steady movement around the canvas. This painting in particular is based on the constant commotion if marks and lines; these lines are then mimicked with a vale of small marks. With this piece an anxious tone is put forth with the use of red and orange and its apposing colours underneath.

My 3 years of college OVER

So today was the LAST day of me being a student at Fanshawe College, and I would have to say that these past 3 years of school have, in a way, helped me grow, not just as a person, but as an Artist as well. I've learned so much from this program that if I did not attend college I would still be doing the same kitschy gothy shit that I use to do when I was in high school. I've established myself as an Artist. Its what I want to do, I can't handle a regular job, so working for my self is my best option at this point. I do know that I want to continue on to university, NSCAD is where I want to be in the next year. This past year, working on my own body of work has made me open my eyes, not only to the art world but to the little things that are all around us, I appreciate things more, like the way the wind blows in the tall grass outside my house, and how the light pollution from the city clouds my eyes to the stars, and how clean the air is when im home.

like I said in my other blog, its the little things i'll miss, like waking up in my room, walking to the studio in the morning and leaving late at night. Being able to do what I want when I want. my freedom.

to be continued....

this is a picture of me before i started painting, Dustin took this because it matched my hair.. lol i spent the whole night painting and it still wasnt finished when 9am rolled around. It got to the point where it looked finished but to me it wasnt. needed more. After i "finished" it i went home and showered, if i went and had a nap like i was going to, there would be no way of me getting my final display ready in time for grading. so shower then back to studio. it was worth it tho. my final display looked great and since i planned it out before hand i had plenty of time to dick around haha not to mention stabbing myself with a drill..
